Frederick Walsh

"The way Fred would
spend an entire day
cutting a sable brush
hair-by-hair and only
using engineering slide
rules to calculate photo
crops might give you a
hint about the level of
pride and passion he
brought to his work."

Graphic design is much like
classic architecture. The strong-
est examples not only create a
meaningful impact when first seen,
but also stand the test of time.

The work of Seattle designer
Fred Walsh certainly fits that
description. Many of his corporate
identity programs are still in use
today, 20 years after his death.
Perhaps even more impressive,
however, are the accolades
bestowed upon him by prominent
members of the northwest design
community, many of whom Fred
helped during the early years of
their careers.

Fred Walsh was an unlikely
candidate to achieve success
in graphic design. He had no
formal training, and was there-
fore unfettered by "rules". Yet he
possessed the very qualities you
look for in a designer charged
with creating a foundation of a
corporate image.
A tireless advocate of perfection,
Fred took a thorough, painstaking
approach to problem solving,
but did so with uncanny creativity
and flair.

It is these core values he instilled
in his daughter, Miriam Walsh
Lisco, when she went to work for
him in the mid 60's. As Fred
Walsh would say to his employees
over and over, "The closer you
get to perfection the more you
see the flaws". This statement
more than any other describes
the ongoing corporate philosophy
of Walsh Design. Fred Walsh
wouldn't have it any other way.

"He was just so far ahead
of everyone else..."
